How to Pick a Perfume

You pick a perfume by picking the room you want to wear. Not the score. Not the list of notes.

Start With the Room, Not the Reviews

A review can tell you someone else liked a bottle. It cannot tell you if that bottle fits the day you are living.

I believe there is no best perfume. There is a best for you in a moment and a place. The same bottle can feel right on a Saturday and wrong on a Monday.

Start with the story you want on your skin. A wet street. A cabin. A porch that still carries last night. Black Sails is a place to begin. It is not a rule.

A family quiz will sort you into a box. You already know the rooms you like walking into. Start there.

Why Paper Is Not Enough

A paper strip is useful for a first pass. You can tell if something is immediately wrong. You cannot tell how it lives.

Paper does not have heat. It does not have skin oil. It does not walk around or wash its hands. Perfume is built to meet a body. Oil perfume especially. The scent sits in the oil. You roll it on. Your heat opens it. That method is in How to Apply Oil Perfume.

So you put it on skin. Two to four pulse points. Dry. After a shower if you can. Then you leave the strip in the store and you go live a few hours.

How Long Should You Wait?

Give it hours, not ten seconds in a parking lot.

The first minute is the open. On oil it is quieter than a spray. It is still not the whole wear. Give it time to settle. Give it a meal. A walk. A conversation. See if you still want to be in that room at hour three.

The long version lives here: How Long Does Oil Perfume Last?. If you decide in ten seconds, you decided on the greeting, not the day.

If you can, wear it through the part of the day you actually want it for. A desk day and a night out are different tests.

What If You Don’t Like It?

Then it is the wrong room for you. Or the wrong day. That happens. Scent is personal. You are going to love some bottles and hate others.

If it is one of ours and it is wrong, we swap it or we refund you. Full refunds, including shipping, for about 120 days. After that, store credit. Swaps are free, net any price difference. Email support@bandholz.com. Do not mail anything back until we send the instructions. The same language lives on the FAQ.

I would rather you try the room and walk away than talk yourself into a bottle because a stranger on the internet said it was a 10.

If you want more than one room at once, a custom set is an easy way to try them. The room you want to wear is still the pick.

The rest of the line is here.
